I am having troubles retaining upper and lower temperatures in my stripper column. I have tried changing fluid levels, increasing steam, and having very little success at raising my temperatures.

Could someone give a good explanation on steam traps and what they do? How do they know when to open? How could someone design a way to have them open at a specific time?

I am looking to recover condensate from a heat exchanger back to the boiler. Condensate will gravity drain from the exchanger to a condensate tank and then it will be pumped back to the boiler.

I hope this is the correct forum for this type of question. I have been thinking about this problem for a while, but have not been able to come to a definite conclusion.
